What exactly is tallow?

Tallow is beef fat that has been gently melted and filtered — a process called rendering — until what remains is a clean, stable, cream-coloured fat that's solid at room temperature. It softens in warm weather and firms up in the cold, which is one of the small signs you're holding a genuinely natural product rather than something engineered to stay identical all year round.

We render ours in small batches here in the UK, using suet — the dense, nutrient-rich fat from around the kidneys — from grass-fed British beef. Our tallow is rendered from HMC-certified halal suet. "Tayyib" refers to that which is pure and wholesome, and that's the standard we hold every batch to.

A very old ingredient that fell out of fashion

For most of history, tallow was a household staple. It went into candles, soap and skin balms, and nothing about a jar of rendered fat on the shelf would have surprised anyone's great-grandmother.

Then, over the last century, it largely disappeared from our bathrooms. Not because it stopped working, but mostly because of economics: seed oils and synthetic ingredients became far cheaper to produce at scale, and the skincare industry followed the cheaper raw materials. Tallow quietly became a "grandmother's remedy".

The science: why tallow suits skin so well

It resembles your skin's own oil

Your skin produces a natural oil called sebum, which keeps it supple and protected. Tallow's fatty-acid profile is remarkably similar to human sebum — a big part of why it absorbs so comfortably and feels like it belongs on skin rather than sitting greasily on top of it.

Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K

Because it's a whole, unrefined fat, tallow naturally contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. These arrive in the fat itself, as nature packaged them — not added in a lab afterwards.

A naturally stable fat

Tallow is predominantly saturated and monounsaturated fat, and notably it is not high in polyunsaturated fat. That makes it a stable, robust base for skincare — one reason it has been trusted for so long.

Does tallow smell beefy?

Will tallow clog my pores?
