Tallow & Honey: Why This Old-World Pairing Works So Well on Skin
Share
Some ingredient pairings feel invented for marketing. Tallow and honey isn't one of them. Both have been used on skin for centuries, both come from nature more or less as-is, and — most importantly — they do genuinely different jobs that happen to complement each other beautifully. It's why our Tallow & Honey Whipped Balm became, and has stayed, our best-seller.
Here's how the pairing actually works.
What raw honey brings to skin
Honey's great talent is as a humectant — it draws moisture towards itself, and towards your skin. That's why honey has been smoothed onto skin for as long as anyone has kept bees.
It's also naturally antibacterial and wonderfully soothing — gentle qualities that have earned it a place in traditional skin care across almost every culture.
We use raw, local honey in our balm. Raw means it hasn't been heavily heated or processed, so it goes into the jar much as it left the hive. Local means we know exactly where it comes from — the same small-batch, traceable approach we take with everything else.
What tallow brings to skin
Tallow — rendered beef fat — works from the other direction. Where honey attracts moisture, tallow's rich lipids form a soft occlusive layer that seals moisture in, so hydration lasts instead of evaporating away.
Tallow has two more things going for it. Its fatty-acid profile is remarkably similar to human sebum — your skin's own oil — which is why it absorbs so comfortably. And as a whole, unrefined fat, it naturally contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
Ours is rendered in small batches in the UK from grass-fed British beef suet, and it's rendered from HMC-certified halal suet — independently monitored through the supply chain, not just claimed.
Why the pairing works: one draws in, one locks in
This is the heart of it. On its own, a humectant like honey draws moisture in but can't stop it escaping again. On its own, an occlusive like tallow seals the surface but doesn't add extra hydration. Together, they cover both halves of the job: honey draws moisture into the skin, and tallow locks it there.
It's a simple idea, and you can feel it in practice — skin that stays soft hours later, rather than needing another application by lunchtime.
Our whipped balm: five ingredients, whipped light
The Tallow & Honey Whipped Balm contains just five ingredients:
- Grass-fed tallow, rendered from HMC-certified halal suet
- Raw local honey
- Organic jojoba oil
- Beeswax
- Essential oils (in the scented options)
Jojoba lends a lighter, silkier slip; beeswax gives the balm structure and adds its own gentle protection. We whip the balm rather than simply pouring it, which is why it feels airy and spreads easily instead of feeling like dense wax — a little truly does go a long way.
It starts at £19.95 for 60ml, and at the time of writing it has 42 reviews — every single one five stars. We're a small brand, so we don't say that to boast; we say it because when this many people quietly agree on something, it usually means the recipe is right.
Scented or unscented — your choice
The balm comes in five options, including a completely unscented version. The scented ones use essential oils — nothing synthetic — while unscented is the natural pick if your skin is very reactive, or you simply prefer your skincare quiet. Whichever you choose, the tallow-and-honey base underneath is exactly the same.
How to use it
Scoop a small amount — half a fingertip is plenty to start — and let it melt between your fingers for a second before smoothing it on. It works anywhere: face, hands, elbows, heels, and any patch that runs dry. Being a natural fat, it will be softer in a warm bathroom and firmer in a cold one; that's normal, and it changes nothing about how it works.
Try it for £2 first
If you're curious but not ready to commit to a full jar, we sell 5ml samples of our best-sellers for £2. Used a fingertip at a time, 5ml is genuinely enough to know whether the balm suits your skin. And if you'd like to see what else we make with the same tallow, the full range is in our tallow skincare collection.
Your questions, answered
Is the balm suitable for children?
Because it contains honey, the balm is suitable for ages 1 and up. For little ones, many parents choose the unscented option.
Will it feel sticky, like honey from the jar?
No — the honey is blended right through the whipped tallow base, so what you feel is a light, silky balm that absorbs into the skin, not a honey glaze sitting on top of it.
Is a tallow and honey balm halal?
Ours is. The tallow is rendered from HMC-certified halal suet from grass-fed British beef, and honey, jojoba, beeswax and essential oils raise no halal concerns. If you're buying elsewhere, always check the tallow's certification specifically — that's where it matters.
Which option should I choose first?
If your skin is sensitive, start unscented. Otherwise it's honestly down to personal taste — the base recipe is identical across all five options, so the £2 sample is an easy way to find your favourite before buying a full jar.
